YMCA Hawks – v Gloucester City Kings 3rd November 2023

This match was abandoned by the Crew Chief in the 4th quarter following accidental damage of the backboard structure during a play phase.

Both officials submitted a report of the incident and their assessment of the play phase.

Both deemed the action of the player to have been a legitimate basketball move, a dunk, with no attempt to excessively hold onto the ring or try to place excessive weight onto the ring.

No technical foul was awarded.

The Crew Chief did not forfeit the game instead reported the game as abandoned.

At the same time the YMCA made claim to the game due to Article 20.1 of the FIBA Rules.

Asking that the game is awarded to the YMCA along with the points and that Gloucester City Kings should be fined £50 due to the forfeit.

A video of the incident was also provided for use by the league committee.

It should be noted this was not a disciplinary matter and was not dealt with under those terms.

Neither Ian Greaves nor Dave Whiting were included in the examination of the facts as presented due to their direct involvement with the clubs. Dave Finch as a senior official was instead invited to give a view.

The collective view of all concerned was that:

• this was accidental damage.
• Article 20.1 does not apply.
• Both teams will be offered the opportunity to replay which both have to agree to.
• If no agreement is reached the game will be awarded to Gloucester City Kings, the score at the time the game was abandoned will stand.
• The committee will determine which players will be able to play in the replay to ensure neither team is seen to gain an advantage.

Based on article 47.8 of the FIBA Rules no route for appeal exists.
